Nice. Doesn't look as though the numbers I've seen from indies is too far off in regards to rankings then, since we can all guess the Top 100 or Top 10 titles are selling in whopping numbers each day. =)

Well, I don't know about "deep analysis", LOL, but I give it a go.

I don't think a lot of new writers understand just how deep the waters are with books, so they likely do have unrealistic expectations. I know some do, having seen a lot of "I published my book, why isn't it selling?" posts.

There are a number of reasons why a book doesn't sell, from it being terribly written to "holy cows on crack, do you KNOW HOW MANY BOOKS are out there?"

I've done a similar estimation before to help show the challenges. Writing is tough. The love and commitment going into the creation and sharing captures an audience. Any writer understanding the challenges and keeps at it is already a success in my eyes.

Where on the internet did you get your information?

Howey was labeled a BBA for calling a woman he'd met at the 2012 WorldCon a "bitch" in a post he wrote not too long ago.

I've never before heard of him being outed for paying for reviews prior to this recent business.

Also, I just checked 4 of his titles on Amazon, and none of them have 99.9% five star reviews. I'm not going to bother checking the others, because they probably don't have 99.9% five star reviews either.

There are a lot of awards programs, and just because they aren't all twenty years old or weren't started by traditional publishers, that doesn't mean they're "fake" awards.

I'm ashamed to have been a reader of your blog. I've read the articles in question and you misquote the original (link removed by mod to keep from sending traffic to the site in question). Howey was outed for buying reviews. He then want on a badly behaving author rampage which resulted in a followup being posted about his books having reviews that are too perfect and they are. Real books don't get 99.9% five stars.

Whether you agree or disagree about Howey, the fraud of Melissa Foster is clear. The awards she claims are fake and the blog (link removed by mod to keep from sending traffic to the site in question) shows this. Shame on Foster and anyone else who uses fake awards to sell books. I won't be buying any of her books and no one else should either.

There seems to be a lot of people who don't think, before pursuing some personal agenda, exactly who all they may be insulting aside from their intended targets.

Though I have to say pretty much all of us are guilty of making generalizations at times. That seems to be ingrained human nature.

Speaking of two-year-olds on sugar benders, be glad you weren't with us at the home improvement store today, LOL. There was a little girl who screamed the entire time we were in there. She was mad as hell about something, don't know what, but you could hear her no matter where you were in the store.

This irks me, because as a blogger, I am abiding by FTC regulations that require I clearly state if I am compensated in any way for a review and if I am affiliated with places such as Amazon or Powell's. (Which I am and mention this in a disclaimer on my sidebar for all to see.)

I am really getting sick and tired of pots calling kettles names and situations like this that make it hard on all of use who read, blog, write, review, etc. as honestly as possible. That people like this cause others to question ALL of us and our motives.

I'm not sure when it happened and why, but it seems that the interwebs has turned us into delineated camps of distrust and malice because of people who think that it's their way or the highway and how dare you not agree with me or succeed where I have failed. You must have cheated because I am better than you and everyone knows it. If you got all those accolades it's because you bought them.

Since when did we all become no better than a 2-yr old on a sugar bender?

I usually manage to avoid books that aren't my cup o' tea too, but I've read books that were well-written that I didn't like by the end.

Please visit the KDP forum and tell everyone I have a Pollyanna attitude. It would be a nice change from constantly being called "mean" or "cruel" (among other things) because I don't blindly praise everyone's books. Instead, I point out the issues I see and tell them to hire editors.

It's my experience that in the vast majority of cases, when people "don't like" a book, it's because they believe it to be "bad" in one way or another. People are generally able to avoid books that simply "aren't to their taste" by their genre, description, etc.

Perhaps you personally have a more pollyanna attitude where, no matter how awful a book is, you smile sweetly and say it "wasn't to your taste," but I assure you most people don't do that.

And it's well that they don't. Books that are great and beautiful and profound can only be honored if we distinguish them from books that are awful.

Karl, you're talking about "bad books", which I'm assuming means badly written or unedited and full of errors.

If a book is bad, then a 3-star rating is dishonest and wrong, full stop. And an author who "freaks the hell out" over a two- or one-star review, to the point where s/he can't read and consider what the review says, is in the wrong business, full stop.

Good writing deserves to be honored, but we can't do that if we don't distinguish good from bad.

Actually, a review that states likes/dislikes is helpful, regardless of the number of stars included. Such reviews provide details to other readers so they can decide if the book is to their taste or not.

They're also helpful to authors (at least those that can read reviews without freaking the hell out over them), because they tend to be pretty constructive criticism.

They also help us with fine tuning who our target audience is.
